I discovered Shannon Mayer through the Rylee Adamson series and loved her writing. When Recurve showed up as price deal on Amazon, I was thrilled. This book is amazing! I read it in one day and could not put it down. The world of the elementals is an amazing creation related to many other fantasy themes, yet with a difference I really enjoyed. Larkspur is a princess, but, due to the evil of her father's wife, Cassava, she is blocked from her powers after witnessing the death of her own mother, the king's mistress. We quickly learn that she has been blocked from her powers and everyone believes her to be useless and weak. When Cassava moves to take over the Elementals, Larkspur must find her powers to stop her.This is a fast-moving story with lots of action. Who is controlled by the queen and who isn't? We figure these things out, but many of the treacherous acts take us by surprise. You will not want to put this one down!

I gave the book 3 stars instead of 2 because I really liked the idea of this book, there were just parts I did not like. It seemed far too fast paced and there were some plot holes as well. I found that I would read a section and it would completely change topic and I would have to go back and reread to see if I missed a page in between. This was especially confusing when Lark lost days apparently staring at Coal? This definitely could’ve used more explaining as this section seemed like it was just thrown in just to move the plot ahead a few days.
It didn’t really make sense to me that Lark went back and forth between “I’m just a doormat” to “I’m a fierce warrior” every other page. It was also very obvious that she is not useless from the very beginning of the book, but everyone around her, including herself, continuously say she is useless. It actually got kind of annoying that they had to mention that on every page, like the point was made that everyone thinks she’s useless move on from it.
There was also a line early on that kind of bothered me, where Lark mentions that she must be retarded because she is weak and can’t do anything by herself. I just didn’t like the use of the word retarded in this regard, a better word definitely could’ve been chosen.
I did like how the book was fairly short and easy to read within a few hours, but I also feel that the book could’ve been so much better to me if it was just slightly longer, enough so that things could’ve been explained more thoroughly.
I am a huge fan of Shannon Mayer's Rylee series. When I heard she was writing another series set in the same world I was happy. The world is so vivid and just pulls you in and I couldn't wait to read more.
Larkspur is a half-breed. She is the daughter of the king by a mistress and is not treated like her siblings. She is treated horribly because she doesn't possess any magic. However, she soon realizes that she is more powerful than anyone knows. Ms. Mayer tells us who Lark is through flashbacks. She is made to train as an Ender, but she doesn't let that stop her. Lark puts everything she has into her training. We also meet some other interesting characters like Ash.
I'm still a Rylee girl at heart, but Lark is a close second.
I have not read any other books by Shannon Mayer so this was a first for me. I really got drawn into it and I could feel what Lark felt. I was a little confused in the beginning because it kind of jumped back and forth but once I knew what was going on, it was a great read. I really grasped what Lark was feeling at the time and I got just as frustrated as she did as the story went on. As soon as I finished this one, I had to read more so I went and bought Breakwater as well. More on that review at that book. So, all in all, Lark is an elemental is able to wield two elements whereas most can only do one. So she is a royal by blood but half-breed so nobody takes her seriously. Go read it and you will know what I mean.....

I was first introduced to Lark in Elementally Priceless, the Rylee Adamson series. I knew I wanted to learn more about Lark and so I grabbed up this book the first day I was able to pre-order it. For me, I had a hard time getting into this book but I think this was because I was too anxious to find out what happened to Lark and didn’t want to wait and read the beginning of Lark’s story.
Knowing Ms Mayer’s writing style from her Rylee series, I had high expectations for this new series and Ms Mayer did not disappoint. I feel I need more information or depth from some of the characters and I am hopeful that will come in future books. There was great action and even some surprises.
The only issue I had was with the grammar errors. This is a pet peeve of mine and just do not understand how this happens, especially with more than a few in a book. These errors jerk me out of the world the author has transported me to and causes me time to get settled back into the world and characters.
Overall, the story was great. It was full of action and even had a few heart wrenching, tear jerker moments. I am excited to add this new series to my ‘must read’ series list. I already have the next book loaded onto my and will start it next.
